A brief primer: what were the Waffen-SS troops?
The Waffen-SS was the armed forces of the SS security organization in Nazi Germany. Originally, they were numerous paramilitary formations. They performed duties guarding the leaders of the Nazi regime and other special tasks. In 1939 the Nazi leadership expanded the SS’s role and created its own armed wing — the Waffen-SS — as part of the military structures, which reported directly to Heinrich Himmler. In the early years of the war the SS was considered an elite branch of the armed forces, but by the end of Nazi Germany’s existence the SS took in everyone, and the total strength by the end of the war was about 800–900 thousand people. At the Nuremberg Trials, the entire Waffen-SS organization was internationally recognized as criminal.

How not to buy a counterfeit Waffen-SS helmet?
Unfortunately, counterfeits of expensive helmets are now common. Especially often counterfeit helmets belong to the Waffen-SS and Fallschirmjäger. Counterfeits primarily concern decals — they apply new SS runes to old helmets. Sometimes a counterfeit is easy to spot yourself, sometimes even experienced collectors make mistakes. Simple recommendations are:
Why are Waffen-SS helmets so valued by collectors?
SS helmets are relatively rare, and the market dictates the rule: “If the item is scarce, it costs a lot.” And as our top digger used to say, “Take what there is – there won’t be a second wave of relics.” Indeed, every day we find fewer and fewer helmets, and the day will come when the last SS helmet is unearthed from the ground…
How much does an SS helmet cost?
Prices start at 200 USD and go up to infinity. The most expensive helmet I’ve held in my hands cost 10,000 USD. In other shops I’ve seen prices even higher – about as much as a small-town apartment. The price is primarily influenced by the condition of the decals and the helmet overall, the presence of a liner, maker marks, camouflage on the helmet, etc.
- Request as many photos of the helmet as possible, preferably with maker marks (two marks) visible on the helmet. Request close-up photos of the SS decals from different angles. Post photos on various collectors’ forums to determine authenticity. Always ask about authenticity on different forums, because European experts often call dug-up helmets fake since they have rarely handled such items. Russian specialists are generally more knowledgeable about these helmets – in Russia, dug helmets are very common.
- Buy from reputable sellers: those who have been trading such helmets for a long time and who guarantee the helmet’s authenticity.
- It’s good if the helmet has photos/videos from digs or photos showing how the helmet looked before cleaning. It’s quite hard to fake how the helmet should look before cleaning.
